The saloon wave memo

What we analyzed, what it means, and how to expand it. One sentence: a place from your past, with the soundtrack that used to live there — rendered as a one-screen room you can press play on.

1. TL;DR

• Theme: place-memory + diegetic music, not “a playlist site.”
• Vibe: warm, painted, full-bleed ordinary life; native script as brand; glass player over the world.
• Stack: scene shell + YouTube (sometimes Spotify) + same-day free deploy.
• Makers: India-first swarm (~80%), from 2-follower explorers to 14k craft accounts.
• Your edge: you already act as the collector (“time for a directory”). Own the index + quality bar.
• Expand: Room Index + Scene Kit + 1–2 flagship rooms in under-served slots (PCO, cybercafé, kitchen radio).

2. What we analyzed

This was not a single tweet check. We treated the wave as a research object across six layers:

1. Your X graph (@shinydiscobear) — RTs, quote-tweets, Grok-adjacent posts around the music-site wave.
2. Catalog discovery — clones beyond what you had already quote-tweeted; resolved live URLs.
3. Makers — name, bio, followers, location, role read, room shipped (all 43).
4. Stack — host headers, framework signals, audio backend from live HTML.
5. Copy / theme — titles, CTAs, “before you became fancy…” grammar, motif frequency.
6. Vision — Playwright screenshots of all 43 sites; multimodal read of a stratified sample; craft scores S/A/B for every room.

3. Theme & vibe

The theme in one line

It is not generic Bollywood radio. It is not lofi study beats. It is place-memory as a browser tab.

The liturgical caption form

• I made a website that plays [songs of X place].
• Before you became fancy… you once [did the old thing].
• ₹20 / simple / music that could fix your soul.

That “before you became fancy” clause is the moral center: upward mobility versus the ordinary room that still owns the song.

4. The catalog (136 rooms)

We catalogued an initial 43, then expanded via ongoing X scans to 136 live rooms (still growing). The live directory (minyvinyl.com/saloon) is the operational view; this section is the strategic summary.

Transit is the densest cluster (bus > truck > auto). Festival and street are the emotional high-water marks. Origins are few but set the grammar everyone else copies.

5. The makers (43 deep + 132 tracked)

• Audience tiers: 5k+ (4) · 1k–5k (12) · 200–1k (11) · 50–200 (10) · <50 (6)
• Roles: design engineers, product builders, AI/ML, indie makers, web3, SEO/GTM, motion, ops

Bimodal fame: 10k+ craft accounts (Yash, Adyasha, The Bugged Dev, Dhruv…) shipped the same weekend template as 2-follower explorers. The template is not gatekept by status.

• ~19 sites had unclear audio in first HTML paint (client-side only) — still almost always streaming someone else’s catalog

We screenshot all 43 rooms at 1280×800 and ran multimodal vision on a stratified sample, then scored every site.

S-tier — sets the genre

A-tier highlights

Truck bangers, Tapri FM, Safar-e-UP, Seven Sisters FM, Akhada, Kalesh FM, classroom “Mastii,” 90s TV diorama, tuk-tuk golden hour, garba stages, most solid bus/road clones.

B-tier pattern

Readable room but thinner: blur-heavy video stills, weaker type hierarchy, incomplete first paint, or adjacent genres (wander/nature) that don’t fully sit in saloon grammar.

8. Your role in the wave

On @shinydiscobear you mostly quote-tweeted the music-site swarm (short reactions), with only two native RTs in the window we checked. You also framed the meta-need early: “time for a directory.”

That is a real strategic position:

• You are not competing to invent the 44th saloon clone first.
• You are positioned as taste + index — the person who gathers, ranks, and names the wave.
• The live directory already encodes that: filters, makers, vision strip, craft tiers.

9. How to build (from bird / X)

There is no single official tutorial. The wave’s “how-to” is scattered across origin replies and people who posted their agent prompts. This section is what bird actually surfaced.

The recipe in one block

Yash answered the practical questions in replies. Quotes verified verbatim against bird on 12 Aug. These are the highest-signal “how it actually works” posts:

• Stack specified: Next.js App Router + TypeScript + Tailwind
• Tooling: Cursor — sourced one-word reply: “cursor”; also shared the background image

What the full prompt actually specifies:

• Five named mood stations — கடை திறந்தாச்சு (“Full TASMAC energy”), அவள நினைச்சா (“Love failure. Full volume.”), மணி 2:17 AM, அவன் நினைச்சா, பழைய சரக்கு — each with its own accent color + background variant; rain only on the heartbreak station
• One editable playlist config — every URL/ID in src/data/stations.ts, real public Spotify + YouTube playlist IDs shipped in the prompt
• First-entry mood overlay (“ஒரு mood தேர்ந்தெடு.”) to satisfy autoplay policy; mood + provider persist in localStorage
• Honesty rules — “Do not show a fake listener count”; “Do not build decorative controls that pretend to work”; keep Spotify branding, no client secret; handle region-blocked videos gracefully
• Acceptance criteria — works 1440→375px, 44px touch targets, keyboard/ARIA, no console errors — “a finished cultural music experience, not a template”

Post-launch iteration (also his): added a sleep timer on user request, opened DMs for playlist submissions, and peaked at ~1.5k visitors.

3. Craft account — @thebuggeddev (places-have-sound)

The highest-craft build account in the wave, in his own words (tweet, 10 Aug):

If places had sound by Claude Opus 5 🎶 Inspired by @ybhrdwj's latest website… It has a 3D vinyl player and a sand particle effect that sweeps across the screen when switching between places, built with WebGL shaders. Design and artwork images were generated with GPT Image 2.0. — @thebuggeddev — Live + Code links both posted

• Stack (his words): Claude Opus 5 · WebGL shaders · GPT Image 2.0 artwork · code open-sourced alongside the live link
• Correction (12 Aug): first pass of this memo said “Kimi + Three.js” — wrong. He builds with Kimi on other projects; this room is Claude Opus 5.
• Lineage: his 25 Jul public prompt (tweet) — a pixel-perfect 3D turntable brief (Three.js/WebGL2/GLSL/GSAP, procedural geometry, PBR materials, real 33/45 RPM, tonearm physics, Web Audio API) — is the ancestor of the vinyl player in this room. Two weeks later the saloon wave gave the object a place to live.

By far the most gorgeous website I've allowed Claude to do. Took hours of back and forth though. — @heyramzi, 7 Aug

The S-tier narrative barber world was not one-shotted: Claude + hours of iteration. Counter-evidence to “the whole wave was weekend low-effort.”

5. Community prompt pattern

Two full public prompts anchor the swarm — zmrishh’s Quarter Room brief (above) and thebuggeddev’s vinyl brief (above) — and most clone sites encode the same agent brief structure:

• Theme / place description + title (+ optional rotating headings)
• Full-screen artwork that is not a dashboard
• Compact player: title, play/pause, prev/next, progress, times
• Public YouTube playlist via IFrame Player API (no API key)
• No login, analytics, SEO systems, or social-share chrome
• Mobile + keyboard accessibility; prefer-reduced-motion
• One-command local run + optional Vercel deploy

• No official multi-part tutorial thread from Yash (his four replies above are the whole documentation)
• No public saloon.wtf monorepo (license is “do whatever,” not “clone this repo”) — though thebuggeddev and justkarangupta did post their code
• No build-stack posts from s4tr2, spikeysanju, hamzaalabou, Adyasha8105 or dhruvtwt_ (timelines checked 12 Aug) — their rooms speak for themselves
• Lots of noise: real barbershops, SaloonPHP, unrelated “clone this” tweets

10. How to expand

What works (keep the law)

1. Hyper-specific place beats “Indian music.”
2. Before/after identity (“fancy now vs ordinary then”).
3. One interaction (press play) = shareable demo.
4. Native script = in-group recognition + screenshot culture.
5. Copy-pasteable recipe → swarm without a brand owning it.
6. Credit culture (“inspired by @ybhrdwj”) spreads the template.

Expansion tracks (ranked)

1. Own the meta-layer — Directory becomes product

Evolve the directory from list → operating system of rooms:

• Submit a room (URL + place + era + language + playlist)
• Map view (India + diaspora pins)
• “Play the place” random room
• Collections: Transit / Festival / Childhood / Global cousins

2. Scene Kit (white-label of the genre)

Ship what everyone reinvented:

5. Geographic expansion without losing soul

Do not go “world music.” Go parallel saloons: danfo, jeepney, Istanbul berber, PC bang, barzinho — same law as Hallaq/Kassita.

What not to expand into

• Generic AI playlist generators (kills place-specificity)
• Comment-feed social networks (kills the quiet of the room)
• Self-hosted copyrighted audio without license (YT/Spotify-as-backend is the current loophole)
• Nostalgia SEO sludge / daily spam (kills craft weekend culture)

Visual quality bar (for anything you ship)

1. Full-bleed scene with clear depth (foreground / mid / far)

If you only do three things:

1. Keep the directory as the beachhead — weekly “new rooms” post from the index; you become the taste layer.
2. Ship a Scene Kit v0 — even a static template + README that produces S-tier grammar.
3. Ship 1–2 flagship rooms yourself in under-served slots (PCO or cybercafé) to set quality, not just curate.

That path compounds: every clone feeds the index; the index feeds legitimacy; the kit standardizes quality; your own rooms define taste.
